The music of Raffaella Aleotti – a reading

January 18 @ 10:30 am

Free to members; others by donation

Join the Early Music Society of Nova Scotia on Saturday, January 18 at 10:30am to play and sing gorgeous motets by Raffaella Aleotti, a virtuosa from the late Renaissance.  Raffaella was a resident of Ferrara’s San Vito convent, whose nuns were renowned for their musical performances.  A description of a concert at San Vito at that time (ca.1593) raved “You would certainly hear such harmony that it would seem to you that you had been carried off to Helicon, or that Helicon, together with all the chorus of the Muses singing and playing, had been transported there.”

The Early Music Society of Nova Scotia welcomes lutenist/conductor Lucas Harris.  In addition to being lutenist with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and many other ensembles, Lucas is also a conductor and Artistic Director of the Toronto Chamber Choir.  He has a long-standing interest in early modern women composers; his reconstruction of twelve solo-voice motets by Chiara Margarita Cozzolani can be found at the Web Library for Seventeenth-Century Music.  Lucas will be performing with Symphony Nova Scotia in January 18/19 Baroque Concert Series which features the life and music of Antonia Bembo, another extraordinary female composer from seventeenth-century Italy. The Early Music Society of Nova Scotia extends our thanks to Symphony NS for sharing him with us.

Singers of all voice types and players of all instruments welcome (pitch 440).  The vocal score and parts may be found here
