The Swedish Baroque and “The Big Three” with Stefan Ekedahl and Jennifer Publicover

October 27, 2024 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Bring your instruments and singing voices to this participatory event. For first half of the evening, HITEM director Jennifer Publicover and special guest Stefan Ekedahl will present a quick history of Baroque music in Sweden (1600s-1700s), with its connections to and unique treatment of dance and tune forms from the rest of Europe, with emphasis on the polonaise (“polonäs” or “polska”) stemming from the years during which Swedes and Poles were ruled by the same royal house. They will also perform examples of this repertoire. For the second half, you are invited to play through some Swedish early chamber music and songs of easy-moderate difficulty together. Parts will be available to download in advance.

Visiting from Dalarna, Sweden, our special guest Stefan Ekedahl is a cellist, a maker of traditional Swedish instruments, and a key figure in the revival and growth of Swedish traditional music over the decades. Jennifer Publicover is a flutist and educator.

General admission by freewill donation ($25 suggested).
Free admission to members of HITEM, EMSNS, and sponsoring organizations; donations welcome in any case.
