PRESENTATION BY DR. CHARLES WEAVER OF THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL

The Early Music Society of Nova Scotia is pleased to announce its last event of the 2025-2026 season: a Zoom presentation by the world-class musician and scholar Dr. Charles Weaver, on the topic “The relationship of text to music in early music.” His presentation will cover chant, Renaissance liturgical polyphony, and Monteverdi. The presentation will take place at 7 PM Halifax time, on Saturday, May 23.
Since 2014, Charles Weaver has been on the faculty of the Juilliard School in New York, where he teaches historical performance. He is also a lutenist, singer, conductor and church musician. He holds a PhD in music theory and analysis from the City University of New York. His research interests include the rhythm of Gregorian chant and the history of the theory of harmony.
As a performer, he has served as assistant conductor for Juilliard Opera and has participated in opera productions at the University of Maryland, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Princeton University, Yale University, and the Boston Early Music Festival. As a collaborative lutenist, he has performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Virginia Symphony. In addition to being a regular member of the ensemble Quicksilver, his chamber-music projects have included engagements with Piffaro, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Folger Consort, Apollo’s Fire, Blue Heron, the Newberry Consort, and Musica Pacifica.
