The King Is Dancing is a lush costume drama about Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632 – 1687), the Italian-born naturalized French composer, guitarist, violinist, and dancer who is considered a master of the French Baroque music style. Based on Philippe Beaussant’s biography of Lully, Lully ou le musicien du soleil (1992), the film presents the libertine Lully as a natural ally of the young Louis XIV of France in his conflicts with political and religious factions at the French court.
